Emily K. Abel is Professor Emerita at UCLA-Fielding School of Public Health, where she taught from 1990-2008.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Swarthmore College, a Master of Arts in American History from Columbia University, a PhD in British History from Queen Mary College at the University of London, and a MPH from UCLA School of Public Health.
Emily has received numerous accolades for her work, including:
- Distinguished Contribution to Qualitative Gerontology Award, Section on Aging, American Sociological Association, 1993, for Who Cares for the Elderly?
- Choice Outstanding Academic Book, 2000, for Hearts of Wisdom
- Viseltear Award for outstanding book in the history of public health from the Medical Care Section, American Public Health Association, 2008, for Tuberculosis and the Politics of Exclusion
- Choice Outstanding Academic Book, 2009, for After the Cure
- Genevieve Miller award for lifetime achievement by the American Association for the History of Medicine, 2024
